Eckart Hahn Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany, b. 1971

Eckart Hahn (b. 1971, Germany) sets a stage in his paintings. By combining elements of underlying narrative tension and a physical tension —evoked from an arresting representation of materiality, pressure, gravity, and restriction— he creates a synergy of form and semantics that transcends a literal reading of his work. These binaries stand out, either by the artist living in a paradoxical society, or through the relationship between nature and culture, the power play of freedom and control, or authenticity and artificiality.

Hahn attended Eberhardt-Karl-University and the Johannes-Gutenberg-School in Stuttgart. His work has been represented in solo and group institutional exhibitions and is featured in various collections worldwide. Accompanying the publication of his monograph, "Der schwarze Hund trägt bunt" 2018, were three museum exhibitions at Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin; Neue Galerie Gladbeck, Gladbeck; and Museum Villa Rot, Burgrieden. In summer 2025, Hahn will present a retrospective of over 50 works at the Villa Zanders, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. He currently lives and works in Germany.
